June 20, Prof. Rik De Doncker, representing Research CAMPUS FEN and E.ON ERC, was invited by Dr. Frans Dijkhuizen to give a talk on the role of powerelectronics in the energy transition at the Research Center of Hitachi Energy, Västerås, Sweden. Taking this opportunity, the day before a trip to Ludvika wasorganized to visit the HVDC and the high-voltage transformer factory. In Ludvika, Hitachi produces MMC converter for HVDC transmission systems (see Hitachi Review, Vol. 71 No. 3, 2022). To realize ultra high-voltage DC transmission systems, high-power transformers up to 1.1 Million Volt are being produced. See attached picture of a single-phase 1.1 Mio Volt transformer for ultra-high voltage DCtransmission systems. Globally, the construction of HVDC systems that are basedon IGBT technology (voltage-source) is booming, especially for off-shore windfarms, interties, etc. During the meeting the potential to constructmedium-frequency transformers for HVDC substations based on Dual Active Bridgeconverters was explored. Such DC substation transforms high-voltage tomedium-voltage, using existing MMC and three-phase inverter technology (see PhD thesis S. Cui. DOI: 10.18154/RWTH-2019-05892) and reduces substantially sizeand weight of all passive components.
